Ethanol Vehicles for Post Office Burn More Gas, Get Fewer Miles

Ouch. The US Postal Service started converting their fleet over to ethanol capable vehicles and are finding out that the 29% lower mileage is costing them money. I wonder when they placed the order? If it was within the last year, someone in purchasing should have done a Google search and read this year old article at Edmunds comparing ethanol and gasoline. Their Tahoe on ethanol got 13.5 mpg on the road vs. 18.3 when running gasoline.

Read the report, why don’t ya. The Post Office admits that the vehicles they bought were too big and much bigger than the last ones they had. Yup, it’s rocket science for some. The bigger the car the more gas it uses. Then they admit that the lack of E85 stations is the biggest problem.

They look to Minnesota post offices, where the E85 cars have worke. Why? Because MN has a ton a of E85 stations. We at the MN Lung Association helped go from 5 to 200 stations in 5 years! The more stations available, means the fewer stations can get away with price gouging. Larger trucks and unfair priced ethanol… that’s why the post office started paying 29% more.

You're still going to get lower mileage. Check Consumer Reports.
